Over time, some lines of expression can appear on the face caused by repeated muscle contraction. These are called "wrinkles of expression" and their best treatment is botulinum toxin. This has been safely and successfully used in ophthalmology and neurology for over 20 years. The doses used in aesthetic medicine are extremely reduced and the possible side effects are, however, transient and completely reversible.

Insights

What is botulinum toxin
It is the purified toxin produced by Clostridium Botulinum. The doses used are minimal and therefore no spread of the injected drug in the body has been demonstrated.

Indications
Treatment of expression wrinkles, lifting the eyebrow tail, lifting the neck and reducing chin wrinkles. Its effect is also important in reducing axillary, palmar and plantar sweating.

Unsuitability
There are few restrictions on using Botox. Surely patients who are pregnant or have neurological disorders should not be treated. It is also important to remember that in the 4 hours following the treatment it is not recommended to lie down, massage the treated areas, do physical activity, expose oneself to sunlight.

How it works
Facial muscles contract after receiving a chemical signal from the nervous system by releasing a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Botulinum toxin acts by blocking the release of this substance in the area where the drug is injected. If the muscle does not contract longer, no more wrinkles will occur.

How to proceed with treatment
A few Botox drops are injected with a very fine needle directly into the muscle that causes wrinkles. Just after the injection you may experience a burning sensation for a few seconds. No strange feeling will be experienced in the hours after the treatment.

Post-treatment
You can go to work immediately but remember that for 4 hours you will not have to sleep, do physical activity, massage the treated area.

What results can be achieved
The progressive mitigation of wrinkles will gradually appear in 10-15 days. The duration may vary from person to person. Generally, sessions are repeated every 5-7 months. Repeating sessions improves aesthetic results progressively.

Other uses of botulinum toxin
As mentioned, botulinum toxin is commonly used for the treatment of excessive sweating of armpits, hands and feet. It is also used to control bruxism by injecting directly into the masseter, also mitigating any associated headache episodes.
