What is it for
Innovative treatment that exploits the micro-ablative effect of plasma (a special form of electric current) which, in contact with our skin, determines a progressive retraction of the excess skin of the eyelid area. It is not actually a true surgical blepharoplasty, because no scalpel is used, no scars are left and therefore no skin is removed. The Plexer can be used very effectively to reduce the unsightliness of drooping eyelids, open the eyes and help eliminate periocular wrinkles that other techniques (such as botulinum toxin) fail to improve. The technique can be slightly uncomfortable and does not involve the use of anaesthetics as the use of an anaesthetic cream, which is applied in the 30 minutes preceding the treatment, is sufficient. Compared to other techniques, including surgery, the Plexer has numerous advantages, including a significantly shorter after-treatment time and the absence of scars. In addition, the treatment eliminates the risks, typical of blepharoplasty surgery, of causing the eyes to open too wide or creating asymmetries. Another advantage is the cost, as it is much lower than that of surgery. Like all medical procedures, it has specific indications and contraindications, and it will be up to the doctor to assess the feasibility of the treatment in each individual case.
How it works
The Plexer is an electrical device with a metal tip that emits a particular form of energy called plasma (a particular state of electric current). The effect on the epidermis is ablative, i.e. the superficial layer of the skin is 'burnt', forming punctiform crusts, smaller than a millimetre, that are created one next to the other. The effects of the treatment therefore only affect the most superficial part of the skin (the epidermis), minimising the dispersion of heat into the surrounding tissues (in fact, the eye, which lies underneath, is not damaged at all). These punctiform crusts do not create any damage to the dermis (deeper layer of the skin, which once damaged can leave scars) and no bleeding is caused. Already during the session the doctor is able to see the effects of traction on the treated skin, so he can adjust the intensity and extent of the treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
A topical anaesthetic is applied to the area to be treated within 30 minutes prior to treatment. After each treatment it is recommended to apply an antibiotic cream for about a week in order to achieve perfect healing of the treated area. In the following weeks the eyelids may remain slightly reddened, this redness will disappear spontaneously.
The topical anaesthetic applied reduces or completely eliminates pain and discomfort during treatment.
In most cases it is possible to achieve excellent results with a visibly lifting effect already after the first session. Subsequent sessions can be scheduled to intensify the results (after about 3 months) or as maintenance (about every 1-3 years).
Plexer is contraindicated for Pace-Maker wearers, pregnant and breastfeeding women and persons with a phototype IV and above.
Immediately after the session, small punctiform scabs associated with slight swelling appear. This swelling increases the day after the session but disappears completely within 3 days, while the scabs fall off spontaneously in 5-7 days. It is important that the treated area be protected from sun exposure for at least 8 weeks.
