Vitamin C
Is it really a good ally for the skin?
We all know that vitamin C (or ascorbic acid) is very important for our well-being: it helps prevent colds and flu, strengthens the immune system and is a powerful antioxidant.
Vitamin C is not physiologically present in our bodies, so it is essential to introduce it daily through the intake of foods that are rich in it such as citrus fruits, pineapples, strawberries, broccoli, cabbage, spinach, lettuce, etc.
But did you know that it is also possible to use vitamin C directly on the skin?
Let's find out together what its characteristics and benefits are. We have said that vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant as it acts against the damaging effects of free radicals, the main molecules responsible for biological ageing of tissues. It also has the ability to improve skin firmness as it is indispensable in the process of producing new collagen and elastin, two substances that give firmness and elasticity to the skin, and is able to protect the skin from damage caused by sun exposure, smoking and pollution.
Another function that we can attribute to vitamin C is that of reducing age-related skin spots (especially those caused by photo-ageing, resulting from excessive sun exposure) and post-inflammatory spots thanks to its lightening action, thus making the skin brighter. Its benefits are also evident on the annoying reddish spots left by acne inflammation; thanks to its lightening and anti-inflammatory action, vitamin C is often associated with other active ingredients in post-acne dermatological treatments.
Vitamin C is an unstable molecule that cannot 'stand' heat, light and UV radiation. This is why products with dark packaging that protects their contents from sunlight are preferred. Checking for its presence within a product is easy! In the INCI list, we must find the words 'Ascorbic acid'.
It is suitable for all skin types, especially for anti-ageing, lightening and anti-inflammatory treatment. Let us say that it cannot be missing from the daily routine of a well-groomed skin.
In the vitamin category, we can therefore call it one of the best anti-ageing remedies.
