Thermal Water VS Micellar Water: What are they and what are they for?

If there are two products that we often see on supermarket shelves or in bathrooms, but which few people really know how to use correctly, they are thermal water and micellar water.

What is Thermal Water?

Thermal water comes from springs that flow directly from the subsoil. As they pass through the rocks, they become loaded with beneficial substances. These waters are in fact naturally more mineralized than others, and are considered bacteriologically pure from the source. Rich in minerals and trace elements, these waters have therapeutic properties for various diseases as well as a strong moisturizing action for the skin.

What is it for?
The properties of thermal water are wide and versatile. First of all, it acts as an effective moisturizer for the skin, providing essential moisture to keep the skin soft and supple. In addition, thanks to its antioxidant action, it protects the skin from free radicals, preventing premature aging and helping to maintain a young and radiant appearance.

Differences from Normal Water
The main difference between thermal water and normal water lies in the mineral concentrations. Thermal water contains higher quantities of mineral salts such as calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, copper, silicon, sodium, potassium, selenium ... which provide essential nutrients for skin health. It also has a neutral pH that helps maintain the skin's natural balance.

Skin Benefits
The soothing and regenerating properties of thermal water offer a series of benefits for the skin:

  • Soothes irritated skin and reduces redness.
  • Attenuates itching and irritation of sensitive skin.
  • Softens the feeling of sunburn and redness after sun exposure.
  • Provides immediate relief after shaving or waxing.
  • Helps maintain optimal hydration for healthy and radiant skin.

We usually recommend Avène thermal water, an excellent product to always have in your bag.

What is Micellar Water?

It is a water-based cleansing solution, it is used to remove makeup and impurities from the skin of the face, neck and décolleté.
"Micellar" derives from the fact that it contains micelles, or surfactant molecules that form small spheres through which make-up and residues on the skin are encapsulated and then eliminated.
There are different types, also based on the skin type (moisturizing, astringent, soothing, etc ...), but one thing unites them all: they must always be rinsed! Otherwise the surfactants with the impurities inside would remain on the skin.

So, thermal water has a moisturizing and antioxidant action and should be left on the face after application, while micellar water has a cleansing action and should always be rinsed off after use.
