Chemical Facial Peeling

Here's how to restore radiance to the skin and treat blemishes!

Chemical peeling is a special facial treatment to improve the appearance of the skin, thus reducing many of its imperfections.

What is it and when is it effective? What are the steps involved in a professional chemical peel? Let's find out together in this article!

Chemical peeling: what it is

Chemical facial exfoliation is an exfoliating treatment that helps to make the skin on the face brighter, more elastic and youthful.

But how does chemical peeling work?

This treatment is particularly useful because it removes not only the 'old' cells but also the most superficial layers of our skin.

Undergoing chemical peeling causes an acceleration of cell turnover through the action of chemical exfoliation.

What substances are used in a chemical peel?

The treatment involves the application of different acid substances that can be used individually or combined with each other in order to achieve the desired result. Depending on the mix of acids used, different effects on the skin will therefore be possible.

The most commonly used acids are salicylic, glycolic, pyruvic, mandelic, lactic, kojic and trichloroacetic acids.

Chemical peeling: what it is used for

By promoting skin renewal and cell turnover, chemical peeling can therefore restore a youthful and 'fresh' appearance to the face, making the skin brighter, smoother and less 'dull'.

In the days following the treatment, mild, practically invisible or moderate exfoliation may occur, depending on the intensity of the peeling performed.

Sometimes an inflammatory response (redness) can be triggered at the level of the various layers of the epidermis and this promotes the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that are essential in maintaining the elasticity and structure of the skin.

The treatment can therefore act both on the surface (cell renewal) and in depth (bio-stimulating effect).

Chemical peeling: how it works

Chemical peeling treatment should only be performed by experienced personnel: one or more chemical exfoliants are applied to the skin of the face and left on for a variable time depending on the type of product used and the desired effects.

Some peelings can be left on for up to several hours and rinsed off by the patient a few hours later at home, while others may require the immediate application of a neutralising substance to block the action of the applied product in order to avoid harmful effects. After peeling it is necessary to apply moisturising substances or specific products with a calming, restorative action.

Chemical peeling: does it have side effects, is it painful?

We are used to imagining the effect of peelings as something that is always 'irritating', causing intense redness and severe peeling in the days following. In some cases this is indeed the case, but technology today allows us to customise the treatment to every need, adapting for example to the desire not to have obvious marks on the face in the days following the session.

In fact, there are 'summer' peelings in the sense that they can also be performed during periods when this type of treatment is usually contraindicated due to the sun's rays.

There are peelings that do not exfoliate, so as not to affect social life in the days that follow, but still achieve a visible and lasting brightening and bio-stimulating effect.

Chemical peeling: conclusions

In addition to eliminating dead cells, this treatment is a valuable aid in stimulating cell turnover and skin renewal. It is also very useful in treating acne, improving enlarged pores and intensifying skin radiance.

Not only that, peelings make the skin particularly well suited to fully absorb any active ingredients applied at the end of the treatment and in the following weeks.
