Nutrition: how does it affect skin ageing?
Did you know that one way to prevent skin ageing is to pay more attention to the foods you consume?
The ageing of our skin (but also of our body) depends on many factors, both internal and external:
- intrinsic ageing, i.e. chronological ageing that cannot be prevented and that depends on the normal passage of time
- extrinsic ageing, i.e. that caused by sun exposure, pollution, lack of rest, stress and poor diet, and is composed of elements that we can partly control
Nutrition plays a very important role in the ageing of our skin: what should we avoid and what is best to favour?
Excessive sugar consumption is one of the main factors in the ageing of your skin!
This is because sugar acts as a very powerful accelerator of skin ageing. In fact, it causes a process called 'glycation' which occurs when a sugar molecule (glucose) binds to a protein.
This is why proteins, including collagen and elastin, fail to perform their natural function, such as giving elasticity, tissue support, hydration...
Ideally, one should consume antioxidant foods routinely to maintain healthy, glowing skin.
What are these foods?
- foods containing omega-3: oily fish such as mackerel, walnuts, linseed, which help prevent dry skin and thus roughness
- foods that contain polyphenols: blueberries, raspberries, currants, blackberries, strawberries contain these molecules that help protect the skin from UV rays and pathogens
- foods that contain Vitamin C: kiwis, peppers, tomatoes, green leafy vegetables, stimulate the production of collagen, a protein very important for supporting connective tissue
- foods that contain Vitamin A derivatives: carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, papaya containing beta-carotene, astaxanthin, lycopene and retinol, very effective antioxidants with photo-protective capabilities
- foods that contain Vitamin E: extra virgin olive oil, wheat germ oil and avocado, which stimulate collagen production and help prevent lipid peroxidation, two fundamental mechanisms against skin ageing
We can therefore also take care of our skin at the table!
Ideally, a healthy diet should be combined with specific anti-ageing treatments for the care, prevention and stimulation of collagen and elastin. These include biorevititalisation (hyaluronic acid), laser, peeling, PRP, radiofrequency, etc.
