What happens when a product expires? What do I do with it?
Skincare is one of those topics that we are so passionate about and talk a lot about: which product is best for your skin, which routine to follow according to the season, the ingredients of the products, the benefits, the risks...
Samsara also has its own skincare line, but have you ever been told what happens and what to do when a product expires?
It can happen that among creams, serums, masks, acids, etc., one of these is left at the bottom of the bag and by the time we remember its existence, it has unfortunately already expired.
This is what can happen:
- The product is less effective: the active ingredients in the product become less effective, even if they contain preservatives, so its use is much less effective than expected.
- Can sensitise the skin: some ingredients, over time, can change their chemical structure and transform into other molecules that, when applied to the skin, can cause redness, itching or rashes
- When it comes to sunscreens, an expired product reduces its ability to protect us from UV rays: therefore, expired sunscreens may be less effective and encourage unintentional sunburn
If we do not have a precise expiry date for the product, we have to rely on the PAO, i.e. the symbol of the open tin which indicates the months the product has lasted since it was opened (3, 6, 12...). In addition, other indicators, not always reliable in reality, on the change in a product's characteristics are based on the assessment of its colour, which can change over time (as happens for example with Vitamin C, which oxidises by becoming darker), or we should be suspicious of changes in texture and smell. If any of these characteristics change (even before the actual expiry date), it is advisable not to use the product and to contact the supplier who will be able to reassure us or confirm our doubts about its actual usability.
If you have any other doubts, do not hesitate to contact our centre in Lugano, we will be happy to give you all the information you need.
